Board of Secondary Education Telangana to Announce Results on @dotShiksha Domain
On Friday, the Telangana government is going to announce the Staff Selection Commission results. But the website will have an extension other than the usual “.com,” in line with a larger global trend to use more contextual suffixes for web addresses.
The Board of Secondary Education Telangana will announce the results on www.results.shiksha.
The website has been launched with an aim to serve the education sector of the country and will be bringing out several other services over the next few months.
The website www.results.shiksha has tied up with State Boards of Education in 24 states, and during the course of the next 2 months, the platform shall be hosting the class 10 and class 12 examination results of all these Boards of Education.
“.shiksha” is what is known as a generic top level domain or gTLD. “A domain is a web address such as www.google.com or www.whitehouse.gov. the top level domain is the last part of the web address, the top, or the part ot the right of the last visible dot. Some well known generic Top Level domains are .COM, .NET, and .GOV,” explains this paper on gTLDs.
Over the past few years, there has been a move to diversify from the most popular gTLDs to newer generic names.
According to technology survey website w3techs.com, “.com” is used by a TLD for 46.5 percent of all websites on the Internet. This is followed by “.org” with a 5.1 percent share, “.ru” (Russian Federation) at 4.7 percent and “.net” at 4 percent.
Newer gTLDs will lead to diversification of the Internet addresses and also help brands and even governments have a better online identity. Hence, the use of “.shiksha” is relevant.
The domain name “.shiksha” is owned and operated by Afilias, one of the world’s largest domain name registries. It supports some of the world’s most well knowm TLDs like .org, .IN and .AU.
A domain name registry is a directory of all domain names and associated information, allowing people to use the top level domains for their online presence.
“Shiksha,” the Sanskrit-derived word for education in India, and the “.shiksha” domain name was made available to the public in 2014, with an aim to identify an “organisation as one that is associated with learning, education and continuous betterment through knowledge”.
